About SPL Teachers

Helping teachers make sense of Shared Parental Leave

SPL Teachers was created to help teachers understand Shared Parental Leave (SPL) and plan their maternity or parental leave with confidence. The rules can feel complicated, especially when you’re trying to work out how school holidays affect your pay and time off, so this tool was designed to make everything clearer.

Why teachers benefit

Teachers are in a unique position when it comes to SPL. During school holidays, you can technically be classed as “back at work” while the school is closed, meaning you remain at home with your baby and continue to receive full pay. Our calculator brings this advantage to life, helping you see how your leave fits around the school year and how much time off you can really take.

How the calculator helps

The SPL Teachers calculator has been built specifically for teachers and takes into account UK maternity and Shared Parental Leave rules. By combining your due date, school holiday pattern and personal circumstances, it creates a clear, accurate plan that’s easy to understand.

You’ll be able to see:

  • When you’re classed as “back at work” during school holidays
  • When you’re officially on maternity or SPL leave
  • How your pay is spread across each month

The calculator gives you a full timeline and a month-by-month view of your salary, helping you budget effectively and make the most of your time off.

Our mission

We built SPL Teachers to remove stress, reduce confusion and give teachers the confidence to take control of their leave. Our aim is simple: help you maximise your pay, protect your time at home and understand every stage of your maternity or shared parental leave.

Who we are

Hello, I’m Adam — a graphic designer and developer, and the creator of SPL Teachers. My wife is a special needs teacher, and after having two children we realised just how unclear Shared Parental Leave can be. During our first pregnancy, we didn’t know SPL existed. By our second, we understood how much difference it could make — more time at home together, and in many cases, more pay.

Working everything out was far more complicated than it needed to be, so I built this tool to help other teachers understand their options easily and confidently. I hope it supports you in planning the leave that works best for your family.
